Album Description
Here's a fun musical way for children to learn about reading, writing, and mathematics. Phonics and numbers are presented in a meaningful context of colorful rhymes and stories. Through hand and finger motions, full body movement, and opportunities for verbal expression, children are fully engaged in the learning process. The songs focus on the relationship between letter symbols (the alphabet) and sounds of the English language (phonemes). The songs also encourage children to search for relationships, order and predictability as they work with numbers. When the lyrics pose questions or problems, answers often come from children on the recording. There is always a musical interlude or a short pause before the answer is given. This gives the child listening a chance to answer first, then check the answer immediately following.

No stranger to the realm of children's records, They Might Be Giants have seen success with their CD No! and the book and CD combo Bed, Bed, Bed. Their latest CD, Here Come The ABCs, offers up twenty-five alphabetically themed songs. However, as is their charming way, the two Johns (Flansburgh and Linnell), use the letters as merely the connective tissue, allowing them to pursuit intriguing flights of fancy that consider everything from the relative power of letters and sounds to animal hijinks. Just as they've always done, there are wistful ballads and high octane rockers.

In a Radio Disney TV spot, a rosy-cheeked family of four sits in its minivan outside a restaurant, unable to cut the engine and go in because they can't stop bopping to the beat. They could as easily have been listening to this disc, which culls the latest and greatest from that über-fun radio destination: With Hilary Duff coming clean (on the opener "Come Clean"), Jesse McCartney crooning in a sweetly life-affirming way on "Because You Live," and Skye Sweetnam and Lindsay Lohan spouting off for the custom ring-toned masses ("Tangled Up in Me" and "Drama Queen"), Jams 7 plays like a special-edition double fold-out teen mag sprung to musical life. If there's a single song to spoil the spunky brew, it's the inescapable "Naked Mole Rat," seemingly lumped in for the benefit of pesky little brothers everywhere. Eight-year-old girls will love it--the bonus five-song DVD especially--and so will their still-eight-at-heart big sisters, moms, and babysitters.

Ralph Covert may have sunk to the bottom of the sea for his second release, but he swished the sophomore slump aside in his wake. Here's a world as unwatered-down as its predecessor, Ralph's World, complete with psychic cats, caffeine-addicted parents, and heapin' helpings of b-b-bean soup and rice instead. In other words, the impossibly clever songwriting is back, and so is the catchy vibe and effortless-sounding folky delivery, something that extends to the cover tunes. Nobody, not even kids too young to be cartoon connoisseurs, tires of tra-la-laaing along with the Banana Splits theme, and why hasn't anybody thought to capture Sinatra's swingin' yet suitable "Fly Me to the Moon" for kids before? As on the first record, the closing tune simultaneously conks you over the head with sentimentality and suffuses you with a sense of connectedness. Somewhere, clans of fulfilled yet fantastically kooky families thrive, and if they had to choose a champion, it'd be Ralph Covert

With Kid Astro, the one-man musical universe that is Ralph Covert pulls up a chair alongside heroes and legends. Ralph's talent as a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, proved over the course of the first four Ralph's World discs and again here, plant him in the upper echelon of all pop performers--check out the bright California melodies of "Sun In My Eyes" and the hooky chorus of "Treehouse Orchestra." But it's the depth of humor in his discs that sets him apart. Like the scripts and characters in Sesame Street, certain Pixar films and, yes, SpongeBob Squarepants, Ralph's songs work brilliantly on a couple of levels.
This CD is Ralph's best yet! We love it and have a lot of fives on the disk already and we just got it two days ago. If you get a chance to see Ralph in concert, or even a free show at Borders, do it! We just saw him again, after a couple of years and I wanted to go back the next night even though the kids were at home with a sitter. Wonderful music, very catchy tunes, great messages and fun, fun, fun!

Even though it includes some of the same songs, this isn't the Time-Life Christmas collection advertised annually on TV. It's actually a budget version of that anthology, and not a bad deal at all. Some may argue it's missing the two Elvis Presley tracks found on the three-CD TV version. Others will contend that any self-respecting Christmas music aficionado probably already owns (or should own) Elvis's wonderful '57 Christmas Album. What's attractive about this one is it gathers a lot of classic singular performances in one place--a tad too much Bing Crosby, perhaps, but also the original hit versions of "Jingle Bell Rock," Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby," Burl Ives's "Holly Jolly Christmas," and the Drifters' "White Christmas" (the blueprint for Elvis's version). This is a terrific cross section of seasonal sounds.

Holiday albums can be tedious, sappy affairs--drenched in good intentions but sappy nonetheless. Not so, this release from the consistent Music for Little People label. It may be short on old standards, but that's only because there's a lack of English-language Hanukkah standards to begin with. A Child's Hanukkah makes the case for a number of original tunes, and while not all will make the canon, they're consistently entertaining enough for a quality listen. Klezmer is the musical bed here, coupled with joyous clarinet and tambourine fills, supplemented with songs like "The Hanukkah Hop" (a variation on the bunny hop), "We've Got a Lot of Latkes" (followed by "Dance of the Leftover Latkes"), and "God Rest Ye, Jerry Mandlebaum." Held together by dialogue--a family celebrating the holiday together, with plenty of lessons delivered along the way--this is a great addition to any child's Hanukkah.

These instruments are durable and of good quality. I don't worry about my kids banging on them as hard as they want. They make beautiful music. The kids have so much fun playing with them. They are real instruments, not plastic imitations that don't sound quite right. This was a purchase I don't regret.

Editorial Review
Your child probably doesn't know Lawrence Welk or the accordion he toted around so famously for years. That should work in the favor of this sturdy, enjoyable instrument. Compact and well built, this starter instrument is a great introduction to the accordion--or just a lot of ephemeral fun. The accordion fits nicely into the palms of an adult's hands, but isn't too unwieldy for its target audience. The number of keys are minimized for ease of use and simplicity, but it's still possible to crank out a complex favorite such as "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (a brief "basic instructions" leaflet is enclosed) only 10 minutes after the instrument's out of the box.
Manufacturer Description

It's not that Disney's bright-smiling team of kid whisperers hasn't done this sort of thing before, it's that they do it so well this time. RemixMania is a room-rattling, Skechers-shaking affair wherein the once-mild and vaguely medicinal "Bare Necessities" undergoes a funk-fortified "jungle boogie" remix, the ever-creepy "Siamese Cat" song comes out with its claws bared courtesy of a "cat-scratch" remix, and a medley including snatches of "Under the Sea," "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)," and "Cruella De Vil" is subjected to the braid-bobbing turntable stylings of DJ Skribble. Credit the producers for so skillfully tarting up these long-loved classics, but don't forget to give it to the artists, too: Hilary Duff and sister Haylie appear, as do Ashanti, Jesse McCartney (the swoon-inducing "Second Star to the Right") and Skye Sweetnam.

The soundtrack to 2003's Piglet's Big Movie, from which Heffalumps borrows a couple of songs, played like a well-kept secret: Instead of stuttering along with Tigger and the gang, grown-ups got to match vocals with Carly Simon, who lent the bulk of the songs baby-blanket warmth and appeal. On this sequel soundtrack for which she was wisely recruited, she appears as honey-voiced as ever, coaxing a grown-up caliber performance out of a kids' orchestra on "Shoulder to Shoulder" and getting down to the kiddy nitty-gritty of "In the Name of the Hundred Acre Wood/What Do You Do?" Though Simon's sweet-natured contributions account for only around half the disc, with the other half returning us to fluffy Pooh staples, the energy expended on a bouncy-flouncy fun-fun-fun slog through "The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers" is well worth it. At home harmonizing rarely gets this good.
