Cleft lip and palate represents the second most frequently occurring congenital deformity (after clubfoot deformity). Approximately 1 in 700-850 births suffer from cleft lip, cleft palate or both. Clefting is associated with many problems including cosmetic deformities, dental abnormalities, speech, swallowing, and growth difficulties. Speech disorders often related to clefts include hypernasality, hyponasality, articulation, swallowing, hoarseness, dysarthria and other speech problems.
